Celebrating Christian Marriage | |
I'm very proud of this one! In June 2000 Caroline Major, who was my administrator in The Centre for Christian Theology and Education at The College of St Mark & St John, Plymouth, and I ran an international conference on marriage. It was just after my book Marriage after Modernity was published, and we wanted to build on the success of that work and establish 'Marjon' as a centre of excellence in theological research. Over 130 people came to the conference, from 11 countries, and about 50 papers were read over the four days. We were able to attract to Plymouth some of the finest scholars in the world, including Don Browning, Margaret Farley, Thomas Knieps-Port le Roi, Philip Mellor, Jack Dominian, John Wall, Elizabeth Stuart and the late Alan Bray. It was a gloriously ecumenical occasion, and the worship sessions were memorable, not least because for the first time some Calvinists felt able to worship with Roman Catholics, and a Catholic mass was celebrated in the Anglican chapel in which all Christians were invited to participate. On the back cover Don Browning called the book 'the best collection of essays now available on the present and possible future of marriage'. Margaret Farley said 'While it celebrates marriage, it fearlessly and profoundly addresses the problems in sustaining marriage...and the possibilities of new configurations of marriage in the Christian tradition'. Kenneth Stevenson called it 'a well informed and prophetic collection of essays, which not only challenges the way we think about marriage, but also offers us clear directions for the future'. |
