Justice for Children Too? | |
I gave this lecture to the annual conference of the Modern Churchpeople's Union in July, 2006. Although I side with the progressive left of Christian social and sexual ethics, I have reservations about the contemporary use of justice in regard to sexual relationships. Its not that I don't think sexual relationships should not also be just: they must! It is that there are other arguments, other theological resources, available to Christians, than to take common cause with humanists in their demands. My second reservation is that much sexual theology and sexual ethics lamentably and culpably refuses to take account of the interests of children. It is \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"adults only\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" in more senses than one! Adults demanding justice for one another do not always remember their responsibilities towards children. Hence my insistent title \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Justice for Children Too\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\". |
